Re-grooving can extend the life of eligible commercial tyres, but it is strictly regulated. Here is what Glasgow fleet operators need to know.

Re-grooving is the process of cutting new tread grooves into a tyre to restore depth and extend its usable service life. When performed correctly on the right type of tyre, it is a cost-effective way to get additional mileage from commercial or heavy goods vehicle tyres.

Re-grooving is legal in the UK but strictly regulated. It is only permitted on tyres specifically manufactured for re-grooving — these carry a re-groovable symbol on the sidewall, typically a small triangle with an arrow. Re-grooving a standard car or light van tyre not designed for the process is illegal and extremely hazardous.

The process is most common on commercial vehicle tyres, where the greater depth of rubber beneath the original tread allows for additional grooves to be safely cut without compromising the structural integrity of the tyre. The re-grooved tyre must still comply with legal tread depth requirements after the process.

Glasgow Mobile Tyre Guys offers professional re-grooving for eligible commercial tyres using correct industry equipment and in full compliance with UK regulations. If you operate a commercial vehicle fleet and want to explore whether re-grooving could reduce your tyre costs, contact our team to discuss your fleet's specific requirements.
