Run-Flat Tyres Explained: Pros and Cons

Run-flat tyres let you keep driving after a puncture, but they come with trade-offs. Here is what Glasgow drivers need to know before buying or replacing them.

Run-flat tyres are built with reinforced sidewalls that support the vehicle's weight even after air pressure is lost, allowing you to continue driving for a limited distance after a puncture. Many new vehicles — particularly from BMW and MINI — are fitted with run-flats as standard equipment.

The primary advantage is safety and convenience. If you suffer a puncture, you can drive to a safe location or a tyre fitting service rather than changing the tyre at the roadside. Most run-flat tyres are rated for approximately 50 miles at up to 50mph after pressure loss, giving plenty of time to reach assistance.

The downsides are worth knowing. Run-flat tyres cost more than standard equivalents and typically deliver a firmer ride due to their reinforced sidewall construction. Critically, a run-flat tyre that has been driven on after deflation usually cannot be repaired and must be replaced in full.

Glasgow Mobile Tyre Guys can supply and fit run-flat tyres for vehicles that require them, and can also advise on whether switching to standard tyres with a spare wheel is a practical option for your specific vehicle. Contact us for a quote on run-flat replacements across Glasgow.
